Custom printing, explained

From a rough idea to a real object

QuestItemsIRL is a one-person maker studio. This guide explains what to share, what gets reviewed, and when a request becomes a quoted order. You do not need an account or a finished 3D model to begin.

Checking whether new custom requests are available…

Start wherever you are

Two useful paths to the same review

The first message does not have to look like a production drawing. Share enough context for the maker to tell you what needs clarification.

Path 1

You have a model file or link

Send a link to the model in your custom request. Include the source and any license information you have. The maker can review scale, orientation and visible geometry before deciding whether to quote.

  • A link is enough to start the conversation; a direct file-upload or automatic 3D preview is not promised here.
  • Say which dimensions and units matter so a model is not assumed to be the wrong scale.
Path 2

You have a concept, sketch or private photo

No model is required. Describe what you want, what it is for and how large it should be. A reference photo, sketch or example link can help the maker understand the goal.

  • Design help is a conversation to review, not an automatic design service or instant quote.
  • Reference images are attached to the request flow as private references; do not include contact details in them.

What happens next

Request, review, quote, then decide

These stages are deliberately separate. A review is not a quote, a quote is not approval, and approval is not payment. The production and shipping steps begin only after the agreed order is paid.

  1. 01

    Request

Share the idea, intended use, size and quantity. A model link is welcome, but it is not required.

  2. 02

    Review

The maker reviews the references, material, geometry and practical use, then asks questions if something needs clarifying.

  3. 03

    Quote

If the project is feasible, the maker confirms the specification, price and any estimated production window before payment.

  4. 04

    Approve & pay

You decide whether to proceed. Approval and payment happen only after the quoted details are clear; a request is not an order.

  5. 05

    Print

After payment and confirmation, the print is prepared and produced when the maker records that work has started.

  6. 06

    Finish

The part is checked and any agreed finishing work is completed. Finish, layer lines and supports depend on the job.

  7. 07

    Ship

Shipping details and any applicable carrier information are confirmed for the specific order rather than promised in advance.

Any production window is an estimate for the specific quoted job, not a guaranteed turnaround. Queue, material availability, design questions, finishing and carrier conditions can change what is practical. No timer or instant quote is implied by this guide.

Better inputs, better review

Size, units and walls

State the dimensions that matter and name the units when you can. If you only know “fits in a hand” or have a comparison object, say that instead of guessing precision.

Wall thickness is not a single safe number for every object. Shape, span, orientation, material, layer direction, intended use and finishing all matter. The maker reviews those factors against the actual job.

The shop does not publish a universal tolerance or strength guarantee. Functional, heat-exposed, load-bearing, food-contact or medical uses need a specific suitability conversation before any order is accepted.

Keep it simple

What to include

  • 01What the object is and what it should do.
  • 02Approximate size, units and quantity.
  • 03Color, material preference and finish expectations.
  • 04A model link, sketch or private reference photo when helpful.

Have a 3D model?

Prepare an STL for custom-print review

A ready model can make the first review more specific, but an STL is optional. The request form accepts STL files up to 10 MB and 100,000 triangles. Choose millimetres or inches before uploading because STL files do not contain reliable unit metadata.

  • 01Use an STL with the geometry you want reviewed; 3MF and STEP uploads are not supported yet.
  • 02Include the intended overall size, units, quantity and use so scale and feasibility are not guessed.
  • 03The local preview is a visual check only, not a manufacturing, strength or fit guarantee.

If you have a model link instead, include it in the request with any dimensions or source details you know. If you only have a sketch, photo or concept, use the no-model path above.

Make a useful request in a minute

This planner creates a private handoff for the existing custom-request form. It does not calculate a price or place an order, and you do not need an account or a model.

Do not enter your name, email, address, or other contact details here.

A rough estimate or “not sure” is fine. Include dimensions in the request if you know them.

The planner accepts 1–100 units. Mention a larger quantity in your request.

Color and availability are confirmed before an order is accepted.

Your contact details are entered only on the next form.

Before you send it

Practical answers

Do I need an account or a model?

No. Guest requests are welcome and a model is optional. An account can be useful for the site’s existing request area, but it is not required to start a conversation.

Is the planner an instant quote?

No. It only carries your non-contact specifications into the custom request form. Price and feasibility are reviewed for the actual idea; no price is invented in the browser.

What are the shipping and return terms?

This public guide does not invent shipping, return, refund or damage terms. Applicable terms, shipping treatment and the next contact step are confirmed for the specific request before payment. Use the request form to ask about a job.

Can you promise a deadline?

No guaranteed turnaround is published. If timing matters, include the date in your request so the maker can discuss what is feasible before you decide.

Can you print a replacement part or functional object?

You can describe a replacement or functional use in a request, but no universal strength, tolerance or safety result is promised. Include the load, heat, outdoor exposure, moving parts or fit that matters so geometry and material can be reviewed before a quote.
