Material-Aware Care for 3D Prints
Start by identifying the material before cleaning or storing a print. Filament brands and blends vary, and a decorative finish does not by itself tell you how a particular object will respond to heat, impact, or cleaning products.
Heat and light
Heat tolerance depends on the material, the shape of the print, and how long it is exposed. If the label confirms PLA, avoid prolonged heat such as a hot car, a heating vent, or a sunny windowsill; follow the filament maker’s guidance for the actual product. Do not assume that a metallic-looking or “silk” finish has the same handling properties as every other PLA filament.
Handling
Support thin sections and articulated parts rather than forcing them. If a joint is stiff, stop and inspect it instead of applying extra pressure. The print’s intended use, wall thickness, layer direction, and material all affect how it should be handled.
Cleaning
For light dust, use a soft brush or gentle air. If the material maker allows washing, test a small hidden area first and use lukewarm water with a mild dish soap. Avoid solvents, abrasive cleaners, and hot water unless the material manufacturer specifically says they are compatible.
If you are comparing care considerations for a finished display piece, see the Crystal Cat Sculpture for its visible design details. For a different material, size, or idea, request a custom print conversation before ordering.
